How to Practise Ontario Plumbing Code Table Lookups
Updated 2026-10-21
A table value is only useful when it applies to your situation. Practise the full lookup process with the Ontario Building Code for Ontario work; separately confirm the reference materials used in your certification exam.
Start with the system and the question
Identify whether you are working on drainage, venting, potable water or another system. Sketch the arrangement. Label dimensions, orientation, fixtures and the exact unknown you are trying to find.
Read the provision before choosing the table
Find the rule that sends you to the table. Check the definitions and scope first. A familiar-looking table may apply to a different arrangement or pipe orientation.
Treat headings and notes as part of the answer
Read units, column headings, limits, exceptions and footnotes. Write down your inputs and the row and column used. Never assume a nominal size is an actual inside diameter or that a value for a stack applies to horizontal piping.
Practise one change at a time
Change one input in your sketch, such as slope or hydraulic load, and repeat the lookup. Explain why the answer changed or why the same provision still applies. This builds understanding instead of memorising a single table cell.
Keep an error log
For each missed lookup, record the topic, the provision or table, the assumption you missed and the corrected reasoning. Revisit the lookup on a different day without looking at your previous answer. Verify permitted exam references with Skilled Trades Ontario before planning code-book use on exam day.
