Ontario Plumbing Code Study Guide (Part 7 Cheat Sheet)
Updated 2026-10-05
This is a study map, not a copy of the code. Use it to see what each section of OBC Division B Part 7 covers, then go read that section in your code book. Knowing where to find things is half the battle.
7.1 General
Scope, application and general requirements for plumbing systems. Read it first: it tells you what Part 7 applies to and how the rest of the Part is meant to be used.
7.2 Materials and Equipment
Which pipe, fittings, fixtures and devices are allowed and which standards they must meet. Expect questions on which materials suit drainage, venting and water supply, and where each can or can't be used.
7.3 Piping
How piping is joined, supported, protected and tested. Pay attention to support spacing, protection from freezing and damage, and testing requirements for new systems.
7.4 Drainage Systems
Traps, fixture connections, cleanouts, slope and sizing of drainage piping. Pipe sizing uses hydraulic loads in fixture units and the sizing tables in this section. Practice reading those tables until it's quick.
7.5 Venting Systems
Why traps need vents, the types of vents permitted, how far a trap may be from its vent, and how vents are sized. Venting questions often combine a drawing with a table lookup.
7.6 Potable Water Systems
Water supply piping, sizing, backflow prevention, water hammer and protection of the potable supply from contamination. Backflow prevention and cross-connection control are common topics.
7.7 Non-Potable Water Systems
Requirements for systems that use non-potable water, such as rainwater, and how they must be kept separate and identified.
How to study the code
Tab your code book by section so you can find tables fast.
Learn the definitions. Many wrong answers come from mixing up terms like stack, branch, trap arm and building drain.
Practice with timed questions, then look up every answer you got wrong in the code itself.
This guide is a study aid, not legal advice. Always confirm requirements in the current Ontario Building Code.
